Tsuen Wan West Station, Hong Kong
1997-2003

In 1996, the Hong Kong government and the Kowloon Canton Railway Corporation initiated a strategic railway link along the west of Kowloon and the New Territories. Historically, the bulk of Hong Kong’s development has been on the east side of the territory, predominantly on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the (east) Kowloon Canton Railway. This new railway link supports the Lantau Airport Railway in generating development along the west side of the territory, including West Kowloon Reclamation and Lantau Island. West Rail would also establish the all-important second border crossing between China and Hong Kong.

In 1997, Terry Farrell and Partners were selected as architects for all stations between the Chinese border and West Kowloon including stations at Lok Ma Chau, Kam Tin, Tsuen Wan, Mei Foo, Yen Chow Street and West Kowloon. The commission also included the concept design for a number of ventilation plant buildings including those at Ha Kwai Chung, Kwai Fong, and at the north and south of the Tai Lam Country Park.

Each station was set in an entirely different context, and TFP were able to generate unique masterplan and architectural concepts for each of the sites.
